It’s “Show Us Your Magnets” Monday!

When my my blogging space was featured in “Scene of the Blog” on Kittling: Books last week, two things about it generated the most comments: the fact that it’s my kitchen island, where the sink is (and yes, I am well aware of the splash risk, since I’m the one who usually causes it), and the refrigerator magnets shown in the background.

I have two things I like to collect from travel and touristy locations – refrigerator magnets and Christmas-tree ornaments. I learned that I’m far from the only one who likes those particular souvenirs, but the magnets have a small advantage – they can be seen and used year-round. I joked in response to some of the comments that we should have a “Show Us Your Magnets” day where we collectors can share and showcase our refrigerator doors…and then decided it didn’t have to be a joke. So for those who missed the original Scene of the Blog post, or who wanted a closer look at my fridge-magnet collection, here it is!

There are some random magnets in there – the restaurant ads, the Festival of Books souvenirs, the Broadway mementos, and the cartoons – but most of them do come from travels. Let’s zero in a little closer:

The magnets on your left hail from travels to Catalina Island, San Francisco (where my husband and I walked across the Golden Gate Bridge and back again), Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, a couple of stops on our family road trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon last summer, and my husband’s visit to New York City as a chaperone for his daughter’s 8th-grade drama class’ spring-break trip there. That trip included seeing performances of Wicked and Spamalot! on Broadway, and there are magnets on the other door to commemorate those.

In the center of the other door (I’m not sure if you’ll see it on the right or below this paragraph, due to formatting wackiness with Blogger) are a few mementos of my former hometown of Memphis, including a couple of magnets from the Memphis Zoo, where I worked for four years before I moved to California. Note the miniature Elvis shrine, too.

If you’re curious about a story behind any of the magnets, please let me know in the comments and I’ll respond there.

But now that you’ve seen my fridge magnets, I’d love to see yours! Please take a picture or two and post them on your blog, and then come back here and leave a link. I’m trying Mr. Linky for the first time, so if it doesn’t work, please leave your link in the comments. (And even though I’m calling this “Magnets Monday,” you don’t have to do it today – just be sure to come back here with your link whenever you do get around to posting your pictures!)

  1. Amy – Yes, they are good souvenirs; cheap, decorative, and useful :-).

Jeanne – Mine were acquired reluctantly, but I think you're right.

  2. Melody – I'd love to see a picture of your current collection, too! (I put your link into the Mr. Linky here, even though your post was from earlier, since it DOES show your fridge magnets – I hope that's OK!)

  3. Now that is a fridge full of magnets! None of them are small either. 🙂

Magnets don't stick to our fridge, but we have a littel chalkboard that we have some on. All we have are the free ones we get in the mail from the local chiropractors and real estate agents. Nothing fun.

  4. Mike – Oh, you have one of those refrigerators :-). Seriously, I couldn't have one that didn't hold magnets.

How do you put up all the artwork the kids bring home from school :-)?

  5. Yeah, it came with the house. 🙂

Our son has taken it upon himself to tape up quite a few on his bedroom walls. That, and a lot are in the laundry room in frames. Seriously.

  6. Hmmmm, I'm about a month late to the game, but thanks for sharing your magnets! I love seeing other collections…and I, too, would never be able to have a fridge that couldn't hold them. (I'd be losing way too much real estate that way!

I did a picasa album for my magnetblog, they're kinda old, but should give an idea, anyway. Not quite that magnetlady with 30,000 magnets, obvi:
