Saturday Review 12-13

Bulletin Board

***** Did you know that there’s a biweekly Book Review Blog Carnival that’s been going on since September? Apparently, I have been under a rock, but in case any of y’all have been there too, now we all know. The carnival runs every other Sunday, and the deadline for submissions to the host is the day before. The next edition will go up on Sunday, December 21, hosted by Maw Books Blog – submissions are due by Saturday, 12/20.

***** Your blog’s great, of course, but could it be even better? Why not join the Blog Improvement Project for 2009 and see what you might be able to do?

New in Google Reader

Sorry, I got nothin’. When I get backlogged on what’s already in my Reader, it’s not the best time to find new-to-me blogs. Better luck next week!

As seen in the blogiverse

Wish I’d read this contest advice before I ran four giveaways here (by the way, I’ll post the winners on Monday).

From both sides of the scale: The ultimate indulgence, by some people’s standards – the bacon donut, at downtown LA’s Nickel Diner. Who said Southern California is the land of healthy eating? But some of us try anyway – and hard as it can be to lose weight, keeping it off can be even harder. High Maintenance is blogging the struggle.

Here’s a nice gift guide for readers and book lovers – I definitely see a few things on this list that sound good to me!

Whether or not it’s accurate that 50% of marriage end in divorce, you can now calculate that risk for your own relationship based on basic demographic data (via Betty and Boo’s Mommy). 2% of couples with demographics matching Tall Paul’s and mine are already divorced, with 4% more projected to divorce in the next five years; 38% of marriages matching my first marriage’s demographics have already ended, with 9% more expected to crash and burn during that five-year window. On a related note: who are you calling a pessimist?

From the Department of Self-Knowledge, Things You Might NOT Really Want to Know division: A few questions to discern whether you might need help getting along with difficult people – or maybe the difficult person is you. (Ouch.)

“Life is not fair. It’s just fairer than death, that’s all” and other lessons from The Princess Bride (you’ve seen the movie – now read the book!).

A teacher’s letter to Santa; Margaret and Helen and Jesus and Santa; taking control over the Christmas tree

A rather unusual place to post your resume; things NOT to say in a job interview

Some things you might not have known you can do with Twitter

A wardrobe issue that won’t be a problem for me personally, and an interesting idea for wardrobe items we don’t get to wear very often

“Emo kids” are not a new concept, just a new name for it – or, adolescence has always sucked.

Saturday Search (as seen on SMS Book Reviews)

I’ve seen quite a few other bloggers do this every now and then, and I thought I’d try it myself as a possible regular/recurring feature. However, based on this week’s results, I don’t seem to get some of the bizarre search traffic other blogs seem to – I’d like to think that’s a good thing, but it’s not nearly as interesting. The most popular searches this week were variations on “office gift exchange”: people looking for ideas? They found this post from last December.

That’s it for this week’s Review – have a great weekend!

  1. People with similar backgrounds to mine who are already divorced: 16%
People with similar backgrounds who will be divorced over the next five years: 2%

But, I’m not sure I see the relevance. Now if it asked whether we’re in the middle of remodeling our home, I could totally see it.

  2. When I lived in Atlanta, there was a bar there called Mulligan’s that served two signature dishes. The first, the Luther Burger, was a bacon cheeseburger with a Krispy Kreme doughnut (cut in half, with the glazed sides facing the burger) for a bun. The other, the Hamdog, was a hot dog, covered in ground beef, deep-fried, placed in a hotdog bun, and covered with chili, cheese, and a fried egg. I never tried either one myself (being a vegetarian and lover of non-clogged arteries), but a few of my friends did and found them very tasty. Ew. 🙂

  3. Ali – I think that statistic’s out there somewhere: percentage of marriages that don’t survive a house remodel. I’ve heard it can be quite dangerous. It’s too bad to sink all of that time, money, and aggravation into a house and then sell it in a property settlement.

Jessi – I can’t decide which of those sounds more disgusting. I miss living down south, though – the most creative deep-frying in the world :-).

  4. People with my stats already divorced – 39%
Expected divorces in the next five years – 21%

Oh dear. It’s because I was 18 when I married.

  5. Michelle – Yes, that’s probably a big factor. I was 19 when I married my first husband (and although we were married 18 years, I suspect we can probably be still counted as a teen-marriage statistic).
