Saturday Review 10-11 (12, 13…oh, never mind)

Bulletin Board
****My friend April from It’s All About Balance (whom I had the pleasure of meeting in person last week, when we went to see 9 to 5: The Musical together) is coordinating a second “Blog Blast for Education” on October 24. Here’s her invitation to participate:

Talk about your favorite teacher, talk about your consideration of homeschooling, talk about the dilemmas of inadequate funding, talk about your last PTA meeting, talk about your dream school, your quest to encourage your child’s love of learning…it’s all welcome in the Blog Blast for Education.

You do not have to live in America to participate. You do not have to be a parent, an educator, or a political figure to have an opinion, a favorite story, a horror story. Anyone and everyone is welcome!

Just write your post, put it up on your blog on the appointed day, and leave a comment and link on April’s post!

****On a related note, apparently last Sunday WAS World Teacher Day – but it’s never a bad time to appreciate great teachers!

**** Completely UNrelated: my husband’s birthday, October 26, is also the observance of World Zombie Day!

A helpful look at recognizing helpful vs. unhelpful criticism

Speaking of helpful – seriously, this is some good relationship advice. (I wish I hadn’t had to learn some of it the hard way myself…)

The shock of recognition, or…older than we think; but when we’re old enough, we’ll have old friends. Speaking of recognition, haven’t we been here before – or somewhere that looks a lot like it, at least?

A plea for an end to negative campaigning, and a mom’s letter the the people (who want to be) in charge

I’ve always been obnoxiously proud of the fact that I was never an AOHell AOL member, but I know many people who have been, and some who may still be (really?). If you are, and you’ve had a blog through AOL Journals, I’m sure you know by now that those are going away; Karen at Outpost Mâvarin has a nice guide to moving your AOL Journal over to Blogger for those who are new to it.

Happy second birthday to Kate‘s twins – appropriately, this is a twopart story

Book notes
One last post for Banned Books Week, but this one’s a little bit different…

For the wishlist:
Losing Kei, by Suzanne Kamata
Capote in Kansas: A Ghost Story, by Kim Powers

  1. I like that one bit in the description of The Blog Blast for Education, “You do not have to be . . . a political figure . .. ” 🙂 I’m not sure why I found that so amusing, but I did.

I enjoyed your links quite a bit this week, Florinda (as I do every week). I especially liked the post on criticism. And I do wish the negative campaigning would end. It’s ridiculous. I cast my vote earlier this week–the night my absentee ballot arrived, as a matter of fact.

Have a great weekend, Florinda. I’m about to put on my shoes and pick up Anya. I hear she’s wearing a cone to keep her away from her sutures. That will be fun. :-S

  2. Wendy (Literary Feline) – My absentee ballot came this week too. Since Tall Paul and I are taking a couple of extra days off next weekend, I’m planning to do my voting then. It will be nice to be able to IGNORE all the electioneering after that. Congratulations on getting it done already!

Hope Anya is OK! Gypsy had already been spayed when I got her, but I remember when mt ex-dog Shadow came home after getting “tutored” – we called him “Conehead” for a few days :-).

  3. Kathy (Bermudaonion) – Thanks for the intriguing review! I’m not sure when I’ll get to this one, but I’ll have my eye out for it.

  4. Thanks for linking to my review! I don’t know if you saw that I’m giving away a copy of Losing Kei, but the giveaway ends Wed!

  5. Anna – You’re welcome, and I did see that you’re having a giveaway of the book, but I haven’t gotten around to entering – off to do that now :-)!
