Another (stolen) food meme: the sweet stuff

I first found this “Sweet 100” list on Liz Rizzo‘s blog, Everyday Goddess, but I stole this version from Madame Meow at A Daily Dose of Zen Sarcasm!, since she included handy links to descriptions of many of the goodies. (It’s originally from CakeSpy.) It’s the perfect dessert – completely calorie-free!

Here goes:

1) Copy this list into your site, including the instructions
2) Bold all of the sweets you’ve eaten
3) Cross out any of them that you’d never ever eat
4) Consider anything that is not bold or crossed out your “To Do” List.
  1. Red Velvet Cake (a Southern classic)
  2. Princess Torte (it’s made with marzipan, and I’m not a fan)
  3. Whoopie Pie (I may have had this, but I think it was called something else. Apparently it’s not the Northeastern version of the Southern classic Moon Pie, though – different filling.)
  4. Apple Pie either topped or baked with sharp cheddar (I’ll stick with a la mode, thank you)
  5. Beignet
  6. Baklava
  7. Black and white cookie (if it’s called a “cookie” but it’s more like a cake, that works for me!)
  8. Seven Layer Bar (I’ve made these before, but it’s been awhile)
  9. Fried Fruit pie (do the Hostess ones count? if so, then “yes”)
  10. Kringle
  11. Just-fried (still hot) doughnut (the only way Krispy Kremes are worth eating, if you ask me)
  12. Scone with clotted cream (well, I’ve had the scone, but not with cream)
  13. Betty, Grunt, Slump, Buckle or Pandowdy (no, but I’ve had cobbler and crisp, which are cousins, apparently…)
  14. Halvah
  15. Macaroons (not so much for coconut)
  16. Banana pudding with nilla wafers
  17. Bubble tea (with tapioca “pearls”)
  18. Dixie Cup
  19. Rice Krispie treats (but not a big fan – I’m not so much for marshmallows, either)
  20. Alfajores
  21. Blondies (which reminds me – where are their superior brunette cousins, the brownies, on this list?)
  22. Croquembouche
  23. Girl Scout cookies
  24. Moon cake (also not the same thing as a Moon Pie)
  25. Candy Apple
  26. Baked Alaska
  27. Brooklyn Egg Cream
  28. Nanaimo bar (but it sounds like something I would definitely be open to sampling)
  29. Baba au rhum
  30. King Cake
  31. Sachertorte (I’d try it, although the apricot filling is a bit of a deterrent)
  32. Pavlova
  33. Tres Leches Cake
  34. Trifle (which reminds me, I haven’t made my chocolate version for awhile. Sounds like a to-do…)
  35. Shoofly Pie
  36. Key Lime Pie (made with real key lime) (Not a big fan, although I’ve had it a few times. You know they’re not supposed to be bright green, right? Those are FAKE.)
  37. Panna Cotta
  38. New York Cheesecake
  39. Napoleon / mille-feuille
  40. Russian Tea Cake / Mexican Wedding Cake (false advertising – it’s actually a cookie)
  41. Anzac biscuits
  42. Pizzelle
  43. Kolache
  44. Buckeyes (maybe, but they may not have been called that – if not, I’d try ’em, at least)
  45. Malasadas
  46. Moon Pie (another Southern classic, but it’s the marshmallow thing – not really a fan)
  47. Dutch baby
  48. Boston Cream Pie
  49. Homemade chocolate chip cookies (sometimes I make them just to eat the dough…)
  50. Pralines*
  51. Gooey butter cake
  52. Rusks/Zweibacks
  53. Daifuku
  54. Green tea cake or cookies
  55. Cupcakes from a cupcake shop (On principle. Cupcakes are just too small.)
  56. Crème brûlée
  57. Some sort of deep fried fair food (twinkie, candy bar, cupcake)
  58. Yellow cake with chocolate frosting
  59. Jelly Roll (I have no objection to donuts, but I don’t like them with filling)
  60. Pop Tarts
  61. Charlotte Russe
  62. An “upside down” dessert (Pineapple upside down cake or Tarte Tatin)
  63. Hummingbird Cake
  64. Jell-O from a mold
  65. Black forest cake
  66. Mock Apple Pie (Ritz Cracker Pie)
  67. Kulfi (pistachio ice cream? no.)
  68. Linzer torte (again with the fruit fillings that I don’t like)
  69. Churro (deep fried cinnamon!)
  70. Stollen (fruitcake – does ANYONE actually eat it?)
  71. Angel Food Cake (but I prefer Devil’s Food!)
  72. Mincemeat pie
  73. Concha
  74. Opera Cake (I may have had something similar, but I’m not sure…)
  75. Sfogliatelle / Lobster tail
  76. Pain au chocolat
  77. A piece of Gingerbread House
  78. Cassata
  79. Cannoli
  80. Rainbow cookies
  81. Religieuse (an eclair. Sometimes they are a religious experience…)
  82. Petits fours
  83. Chocolate Souffle
  84. Bienenstich (Bee Sting Cake)
  85. Rugelach
  86. Hamenstashen
  87. Homemade marshmallows (for reasons previously stated)
  88. Rigo Janci/Hungarian Chocolate Cake
  89. Pie or cake made with candy bar flavors (Snickers pie, Reeses pie, etc)*
  90. Divinity
  91. Coke or Cola cake
  92. Gateau Basque
  93. S’mores (but guess why I’m not a fan?)
  94. Figgy Pudding (I’ve always called it “piggy fudding” when singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”)
  95. Bananas foster or other flaming dessert
  96. Joe Froggers
  97. Sables
  98. Millionaire’s Shortbread
  99. Animal crackers
  100. Basbousa

* I have NOT eaten these, but I couldn’t change the formatting!

Are your favorites on this list? How about your least favorites? Is there anything here you want to rush out and try?

  2. Serena – New York cheesecake (well, most kinds of cheesecake, to be honest) is up toward the top of my list too. Mmm, now I’m hungry :-).

  3. Wow! That is a big list! I haven’t heard of a few of those, I need to do some research. 🙂

My grandmother used to make pizzelles by the truckload. I didn’t like then that much, which worked out well for my sister. 🙂

  4. Mike – I didn’t know what some of them were either, which is why the links were very helpful. Researching this could be a lot of fun.

  5. OH my god, they spelled crème brûlée right! Do you know how rare that is? In my entire life, I have only ever seen one American restaurant spell that dessert correctly.

  6. Dewey – OK, you just made me laugh with that comment :-). I don’t think I knew it was rare to spell it correctly – I just knew it tasted good! This did originally come from a food blog, so I would hope they could spell it right.

  7. What? You don’t want to try green tea cake? 😉
There’s green tea flavoured everything here, or almost. I actually quite like it but I know it can be an acquired taste.
I haven’t had a Nanaimo bar in ages. So rich and sweet! I may have to have one next time I’m in Canada though.
One of my favourite desserts is rhubarb pie. Or Chocolate Fondant. Mmmm.

  8. Tanabata – Sometimes I’ll get my lemonade iced tea with green tea, and I like that. I just didn’t think the cake sounded terribly appealing.

I’ll second that “mmm” on the chocolate fondant :-).

  9. Wendy (Literary Feline) – Neither had I, and some I wasn’t sure about till I went to the links. I just didn’t think there was quite enough chocolate on the list :-).
