Ten on Tuesday Special – Vacation edition

We got home on Monday afternoon, and we don’t go back to work till Wednesday, so today is sort of a “coda” for our vacation. Posts and pictures from the trip will be forthcoming, but in the meantime, here’s a five-and-five personal Ten on Tuesday.

5 Things I Missed While on Vacation:

  1. My dog! I think this was the longest (10 days) that we’ve been away from each other. She was actually supposed to stay at the boarding kennel until this morning, but since we made it home earlier on Monday than we’d expected, we were able to pick her up sooner.
  2. My showerhead. It’s one of those hand-held adjustable ones, and I’ve really gotten spoiled by it.
  3. My morning routine. Not the getting-up-at 4:30 part, but the workout, the grooming regimen (which always gets short shrift on vacation, since there are things I don’t bring), and breakfast. Yes, I actually missed oatmeal, and pineapple juice too.
  4. Reading blogs. I actually coped with being offline better than expected, and since my time online was limited, I restricted most of it to e-mail, responding to comments here, and writing. I’m looking forward to catching up with y’all!
  5. My own bed. Especially the pillows.

5 Things I DIDN’T Miss While on Vacation:

  1. Traffic reports. And traffic in general, let’s be honest…
  2. A Southern California heat wave. Weather-wise, I understand we picked a good time to head north. We’re also getting lucky in having a cooling trend arrive just in time for our return.
  3. Work.
  4. My cell phone.
  5. Stress.

What are some of your favorite – and least favorite – things about vacations?

It was a great trip, and it’s nice to be back. One more big “thank you” to the guest posters!

  1. Welcome home! You didn’t miss stress? How come? 🙂 we are probably going to Disney Workd next year with the kids. I’m afraid it is going to be stressful. I might need an extra week to relax from the vacation. 🙂

  2. Mike – We spent almost a week at Disney World when my son was nine. If you stay at one of the Disney resorts so you can come and go more easily, it helps. It helps even more if you can go at some time other than during the summer, when it’s most crowded, hot and humid. You will want a couple of days to recover afterwards, though, regardless.

  3. Well, I totally agree with the 5 things you missed. Coming home to my dogs was almost as exciting as being on vacation. 🙂

The other thing I miss while on vacation, though, is my cooking. I’m not the best cook, but eating out gets old, in my opinion. Especially breakfast.

  4. Trish – I have to agree with you about eating breakfast out; after a few days, I just crave a bowl of cereal or something. My stepdaughter would agree too; the day we got home, she said “I don’t think I want to go out to eat for awhile.” And I spent some time cooking yesterday :-).

  5. It’s so good to have you home! Although you still posted occasionally while you were away so I can’t really say I missed you, can I? 🙂

Oh! I do know all about missing our animals when we travel without them. 🙁 It’s so hard to leave them in the first place.

Stress! I wouldn’t miss that one bit either. Today was especially harrowing. And the worst part? It was all for stupid reasons! I work with a bunch of adults who are acting like junior high kids. My boss is on vacation an so I’m her in-charge. I wish she’d come back early. Like tomorrow. Haha

I do love to travel and don’t get to do enough of it. I enjoy seeing new sights and eating out, learning about the history of a place. Not having to be at work. All of that good stuff. 🙂

  6. Literary Feline – Well, I tried not to make my absence too noticeable, but it’s nice to be back; hope you missed me a little, Wendy :-D!

Are you sure we don’t work in the same place? Or is it a function of working for agencies that deal with children that sometimes the staff seems to be picking up their habits?

My husband says next year we probably won’t travel quite so long or so far away :-).

  7. I always miss the furry boys when we go away, and feel a bit guilty about them being holed up at the kennel. It’s still nice to go away though sometimes. I wish it weren’t getting so expensive. We’re thinking of going to Canada at the end of the year to visit but who knows how much airfare and fuel surcharges and luggage charges will be by then???

  8. Tanabata – Travel is definitely getting pricey. Now that we’re back from the road trip, we’re probably going to less of it for awhile.

The funny thing is, since we’re in expensive California, we probably spend more staying close to home than we do if we get away.
