Scenes of the times

In all the hype and the shopping, let alone Santa and the elves, sometimes the origin the Christmas celebration can slip one's mind. My friend Ann, who is in her final year at the General Theological Seminary in New York City (yes, I'm a near-heathen these days, and one of my good friends will be a minister in a few months - go figure), sent a link to a blog that can help remind us about it.

The Cavalcade of Bad Nativities is a sub-blog of Going Jesus, another project of the mind behind Going Bridal (which I visited a few times during my engagement as an antidote to wedding-planning insanity). She'll be updating it throughout December - talk about an Advent calendar! - so if (mostly) harmless irreverence doesn't bother you, check it out. (And if you really want to support this kind of thing, buy a T-shirt from her wtfwjd? store.)

She doesn't create any of these Nativities herself - she's just chronicling what she finds on eBay and craft sites. So far, this one's my favorite, but I've added the blog to my feed reader so I won't miss anything good:

King Herod’s always after me lucky charms!

(Just to clarify, my friend Ann has nothing to do with the blog - but I really do appreciate her telling me about it!)

I am not a religious person, but I do love nativity scenes (and everything else about the Christmas season). :-)

I thought this was hilarious! I think you could be right...the leprechauns at the manger is the best one. What will they think of next? Barbie in the Barn?

I figure that since the person who told me about the blog is a seminarian, it was safe for religious folks as well as the more secular among us. (As it turns out, the person who's maintaining the blog was a church secretary for several years, so she knows her stuff.) But I think you have to be able to laugh at things anyway.

Anne - A Barbie Nativity!? Now that would be quite something to see, wouldn't it? If it's out there, it will probably show up on that blog.

Literary Feline - I'm not so much for church myself anymore, but my Christmas decorating at home isn't complete without my small Nativity scene. Then again, right now my Christmas decorating isn't even started! :-)
